Hey there, neighbor! Hank here — your local fix-it guy.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Hank, it’s Cornelius — we don’t exactly get “Antarctic weather patterns.”

True enough. But let me tell you, a Carolina winter still packs plenty of cold nights, sneaky breezes, and humidity swings that can make your heating bill jump faster than a frog on a hot sidewalk.

That’s why fall is the perfect time to give your windows and doors a once-over before winter creeps in. A little bit of maintenance now saves you a lot of shivering (and dollars) later.

How?

Here are a few tips to ensure your windows and doors are properly sealed as we move into cooler weather.

1. Hunt Down The Drafts in Your Home

ree

If you’ve ever felt that little whisper of cold air sneaking in around your window frame — yep, that’s a draft. It might seem small, but those tiny gaps add up fast, letting your warm air slip right out and that chilly breeze slide right in.

Here’s the trick: on a windy day, light a candle or stick of incense and slowly trace around the window or door frame. If the smoke dances, you’ve found a leak!

Seal it up with a bit of weather-stripping or caulk, and boom — instant warmth and lower energy bills.

2. Give Your Windows a Once-Over

ree

Windows do more than let in light — they’re your first line of defense against cold air and moisture. So this fall, take a few minutes to:

  • Check for cracked or brittle seals around the edges.

  • Look for condensation between panes — that’s a sign the seal’s failed and the window’s letting in moisture.

  • Wipe the tracks clean and add a little lubricant if they’re sticky or squeaky.

If your windows are older than your favorite flannel and you’re noticing fog or drafts, it might be time for an upgrade.

A quick repair or replacement can make your home quieter, warmer, and a whole lot more energy-efficient.

3. Don’t Forget the Doors

ree

Doors take a beating — opening, closing, slamming (looking at you, teenagers). Over time, the seals wear out, hinges loosen, and suddenly that “little gap” is working overtime against your heating system.

Take a close look at your weather-stripping — if it’s cracked, flattened, or falling off, swap it out. And while you’re there, tighten any loose screws, oil the hinges, and check that the threshold is sitting snug against the bottom of the door.

Bonus tip: if your front door feels colder than the rest of the house, a fresh coat of paint or sealant can go a long way toward keeping out moisture and protecting the wood.

4. Watch Out for Moisture and Rot

ree

Here in Cornelius, we get that sneaky combo of mild temps and heavy humidity. It’s a perfect recipe for wood rot, especially around door frames and window sills.

Take a screwdriver and gently press along those areas — if the wood feels soft, spongy, or flakes apart easily, you might have rot setting in.

The sooner you fix it, the better. (And yes, I know a guy who can help. It’s Me!)

5. Schedule a Handyman to Prepare you for Winter
